Russula simillima Pk. Cap 3-8cm across, convex-flattened, margin tuberculate; pale ochre to yellow-brown or buff; smooth; cuticle peels up to two-thirds. Gills close; pale buff yellow. Stem 25-60 x 5-20mm, equal; pale buff-yellow. Flesh yellowish white. Odor not distinctive. Taste rather acrid. Spores broadly ellipsoid, 6.5-9 x 5.5-7µ.; warts 0.4-1.0µ high, with partial to complete reticulum. Deposit white (A-B). Habitat in beech woods. Frequent. Found in eastern North America. Edible. (Never eat any mushroom until you are certain it is edible as many are poisonous and some are deadly poisonous. Comment Singer places this as a subspecies of Russula fellea (Fr.) Fr., a European species differing only in its odor of household geraniums and slight microscopic differences. |
